How I wish the Broadway Junior shows existed when I was a young theater student!
I mean, how cool is it that kids and teens get to do condensed versions of REAL, licensed Broadway and Disney shows?
They're so fortunate!
They're also lucky because it seems park districts, schools, religious groups, and youth theater groups provide tons and tons of opportunities for kids these days, and these shows are everywhere!
But! I lot of you may not know where to start as selecting the perfect song for your young performer that wants to audition for a Broadway Junior show.
Whether you are new to the process OR if you just want some new ideas, I've got you!
Always remember to read the audition announcement carefully to note how much of the song is needed. Rarely, they will allow those auditioning to sing the whole song. Most often, they're expected to sing a cut of the song. The most common is 32 bars, or roughly a minute. 16 bars is not to common for kids, but it does happen.....and if that's what they're looking for, it's about 30 seconds.
When I compiled this list, I had children 12 and younger in mind, although some of the songs will clearly work for older, too.
All of the songs listed are from shows that have Broadway Junior editions!
Here are 11 musical theater songs perfect for Broadway Junior auditions!
1) I Won't Grow Up- Peter Pan
Can be sung by a boy or a girl with strong comedic skills and a big, bold voice and personality!
2) Consider Yourself- Oliver!
Although sung by the Artful Dodger in the show, there's no reason why any child with confidence and a big voice can't nail this song. I wish more companies did "Oliver Junior", Oliver! is hands down one of my absolute favorite musicals of all time!
3) Part of Your World- The Little Mermaid
So many great songs for girls from the Disney shows! Don't worry about this being an "overdone" song, we all know it is.
If you can sell it and sing it well, really....that's all that matters. Plus, this mid-range song is not difficult vocally.
4) The Lamest Place in the World- 13 The Musical
Funny lyrics and a driving melody- I LOVE this one for my young performers, and they do,too! Best for a preteen girl.
5) Giants in the Sky- Into the Woods
Jack is SUCH a great role for a young male performer- and this song is an awesome audition song!
6) Home- Beauty and the Beast
Ah, I love this moving ballad! Added in for the stage show, it's memorable, simple and sweet. Mid-range. Can be used for all ages.
7) Santa Fe- Newsies
A bit of an anthem for young male performers, but it's a great one....if you can sing it, why not go for it, right?

This is a great audition song for the littlest performers auditioning. Super cute and jazzy, too!

Good for a boy or a girl, especially the younger kids auditioning.
This show has been great for providing so many roles to kids!
10) Good Morning- Singing in the Rain
Golden age, but still cute and fun! Easy to learn, not hard vocally, and would work well for young ones.
