Auditions can be nerve-wracking. It was a million years ago (ok, it was the 90s, close enough!) when I was a teenager that loved musical theater, but I remember feeling my most confident when I had a song that was FUNNY to perform!
This list is for the guys! Especially those young singers that also have great comedic chops...OR.....those guys with killer charisma and stage presence, that may not be where they want to be vocally just yet.
I have a list of eleven fantastic funny Broadway comedy songs that are perfect for auditions, recitals, or vocal competitions.
Soooo....here they are! I hope you find at least a few that you want to try.
1) Last One Picked- from Whoop Dee Doo!
Whoop Dee Doo? Huh? What's that show? Well, it was a musical revue on Broadway, not a traditional musical, so yeah. Not many people have heard of this one. HOWEVER! This clever number about a young man who wasn't the most athletic in school is a piece that will no doubt have everyone laughing out loud.
2) I'm Calm- A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
Sondheim at his funniest! This up-tempo number is great for a character tenor who isn't afraid of higher notes as well as physical comedy!
3) C'est Moi- Camelot
Are you a baritone with a big voice as well as big presence? This song from the gorgeous classic show Camelot is meant for you!
4) Me- Beauty and the Beast
If you can pull off the above number, this number is also perfect for your type (bold young baritone) without a doubt!
5) Where Was I When They Passed Out Luck?-Minnie's Boys
Here's another clever number, this time for a tenor! This song is further proof that sometimes you'll find a total gem in a show no one has heard of.
6) Those Canaan Days- Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
There is a solo version of this in the ever popular Singers Musical Theater Anthology published by Hal Leonard, and you should definitely give it a look! I had the best time coaching a young musical theater performer in this song- it's SO over the top and a major highlight of an already super fun show!
7) The Kite- You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Comedy songs abound in this adorable show! Do you consider yourself more deadpan funny, with good patter skills? This one's for you!
8) I am Adolpho- The Drowsy Chaperone
Another hilarious, and yup...super over the top song for a big voiced baritenor. Go big or go home with this one!
9) Slide Some Oil to Me- The Wiz
This number is for a young African American man who is a confident and lovable showman! Is there a single song in The Wiz that isn't perfect?
10) Grow For Me- Little Shop of Horrors
For those that enjoy playing sweet, lovable nerdy types!
Alan Menken has never written one dud......the guys that I teach adore this one!
11) Make 'Em Laugh- Singing in the Rain
If you want classic, it's right here! This is great for a high energy comedian that moves very well. Don't feel like you have to match Donald O' Connor...make it your own...!
