If you’ve been contemplating whether to go virtual or stick with old school face-to-face lessons, you're in the right place. Let’s break down both options with some real talk so you can make the choice that fits your singing goals—and life—best!
In-Person Lessons: The Classic Choice 🎶
There’s something magical about being in the same room with your vocal coach. The energy is real, the connection is tangible, and let’s be honest: you get to see your coach’s fabulous sense of style up close (we all know it's one of the perks, am I right? I don't buy these zany Elvis socks for just myself!
Here are a few reasons why in-person lessons might be for you:
Here are a few reasons why in-person lessons might be for you:
Instant Feedback: You can see and hear exactly what’s happening with your voice in real time. Got that weird feeling in your throat? Your coach can pinpoint immediately.
The Personal Touch: Vocal coaching is about more than just singing. It’s about connecting, and sometimes you need that face-to-face interaction to really bond with your teacher. Some coaches also happen to have some pretty awesome pets that are happy to cheer you on, too (depending on the mood they're in, that is).
Fewer Distractions: The world outside the studio may be chaotic and loud, but inside that room, it’s all about YOU! No doorbells ringing, text notifications, no emails to check—just you and your voice. Bliss!
But let’s not get carried away! There are a couple of challenges too:
Location, Location, Location: You’ve got to physically get to the lesson. If you’re in the northwest Chicago suburbs (lucky for you!), that’s not so bad. But if you’re juggling a busy schedule or live far from your coach, it could be a tough one to manage.
Time Commitment: Sometimes, it’s hard to fit travel and prep into your already packed calendar. And let’s not forget—life happens! A sick day for you, sick pet, a work deadline, or a random snowstorm (we all know those come out of nowhere, ugh! )
Online Lessons: Flexibility Meets Technology 💻
The other option! We have online lessons—the modern marvel of the digital world. They’ve come a long way ( I should know!) and with the right tech setup, you can have a vocal session from the comfort of your own home. Here’s why online lessons might be your jam:
Convenience is King: You don’t need to fight traffic, deal with parking, or show up in your finest “I’m trying to impress my vocal coach” outfit (hahaha!) You can literally just roll out of bed, hit “join meeting,” and be ready to sing. Easy!
Record & Review: Got a tricky passage? No problem! Online lessons often come with the perk of recording your session. You can review your coach’s feedback and work on those tough spots at your own pace, again and again. Dunno why it is, but sometimes in person students forget to record!
Flexibility: Busy schedule? No problem. Online lessons make it easy to squeeze in a lesson whenever it fits. You can take your voice lessons while you’re at home, at a coffee shop, or even on vacation if you’re feeling fancy. Yes, people have taken lessons with me on vacation....now that's dedication!!!
But, don’t get too comfortable—online lessons do come with a few caveats:
Technology is Key: You need a solid internet connection and a quiet, distraction-free space. Otherwise, glitches, lag, and audio issues can ruin the vibe. (Not to mention your internet provider’s customer service might just drive you to scream).
Less Immediate Correction: While your coach can still guide you through technique, there might be some subtle things—like posture or breathing—that are harder to catch virtually. Sometimes, the coach’s watchful eye in-person can make all the difference.
So, Which One’s Right for You?
The good news: both options can work, and work very well! It’s all about what fits your style and goals:
If you thrive on human connection and live close to your vocal coach, in-person lessons might be your best bet. You’ll get that immediate feedback and enjoy the full vibe of the studio setting.
If you’re all about flexibility, convenience, and avoiding the dreaded commute, online lessons are a game-changer. Plus, you can stay in your comfy pants—no judgment here!
It's also worth noting that you may want to mix up the two options depending on your specific needs. It's great to have options, isn't it?

In the end, whether you’re in the same room or a few miles apart, the most important thing is your commitment to improving your voice. So, pick your path, sing your heart out, and make it happen!
